Condensation: Simple tip to avoid moisture gathering on windows and causing mould

There’s just one rule every household should follow to stop condensation and mould on windows, according to an expert.

As the cold weather continues, condensation can cause that musky smell and peeling of wallpaper.

Allan Reid, founder of Art Window and Doors says there is “no simple” answer to preventing condensation.

“While double glazing is effective in preventing some condensation, the colder conditions can, unfortunately, bring mould regardless," he said.

But he added there is a solution for everyone with a variety of options from quick hacks to investing in mould-proof equipment.

Reid said the top rule everyone should follow to help reduce condensation is to ensure there is adequate ventilation.

He Ssaid: "Whether you have single, double or triple-glazed windows, proper ventilation is always the best way to reduce condensation.

“For double and triple-glazed windows, condensation between the layers of glass is indicative of a problem, such as the air-tight seal failing and letting the insulating gas out."

The expert says that replacing air-tight seals between the layers of glass can prevent water vapour and for a small price of between £5 to £10 per window.

He added: “If the seal fails and the insulating gas is not present, the subsequent water vapour will reduce the lifespan of your windows and potentially lead to draughts and chilly air.”

Paint around windows which is starting to chip, bulge or flake could also indicate a condensation problem.

He said: "In addition, paint can often hide dampness, which is caused by condensation. By ignoring the flaking paint and continuing to replace it, you avoid treating the problem, allowing it to worsen."

The pro also advises installing an extractor fan directly into a double-glazed or single-glazed window for a significant reduction in condensation.

He added: This is particularly effective for rooms prone to steaming, such as kitchens and bathrooms, with cooking and showering leading to an increase in water vapour."

In addition, trickle vents can be fitted into different types of window frames to help circulate air.

Reid said: These are highly effective at aiding the circulation of air in your home, leading to a reduction in mould, condensation and dampness.

“Unfortunately, some older homes may lack these features, but the units are mandatory when replacing windows as of 2022.”

Homeowners can also reduce condensation while lowering energy bills with triple glazing.

According to Reid, triple glazing is up to 40 per cent more thermally efficient than most uPVC double glazing which can reduce draughts, condension and cold spots.
