Round toe shoes may be comfy and functional but according to one style guru, they are far from fashionable

Even the most youthful, flattering outfit can be ruined by the wrong pair of shoes.

According to a style expert for women over 50, there is one style of shoe that should be avoided at all costs if you want to look younger than you are.

Deirdre Nicholas from 50 & Fabulous with My Friend Deirdre spoke exclusively to GB News about why middle-aged ladies should "ditch" their round-toe shoes.

She said: "Age is just a number. This is a great thing to remember and in my view, having the 'right clothes' can make that number a lot harder to guess - and, you may well end up looking 10 years younger than you are.

"I know this is a little controversial because round-toe shoes can be so comfy. But, I really think that the type of footwear we choose says a lot about our age."

According to the style guru, a round-toe pair of shoes will do nothing to accentuate a woman's legs - in fact, they'll make them look worse.

Answering the question, 'So, why ditch round-toed shoes?', Deirdre explained: "Well, mainly because they’re really not very flattering, especially with skirts or shorter trousers, as they make the foot and the leg look shorter and frumpier and have a foreshortening effect."

The fashionista advised that women over 50 opt for shoes with almond-shaped toes or slightly pointed toes if they can wear them.

She said: "That way, the whole effect of what you are wearing is elongated - your legs will look longer and slimmer and you will look taller and more polished, not to mention younger too."

A heeled shoe - even one that's just two inches high - can also have a lengthening effect, as well as making an outfit appear more polished.

Heather Anderson from Fashion Over 40 seconded the claim that round-toe shoes are a no-go.

She also warned women over 40 to "stay away" from a specific style of jeans that may be reserved for the young.

Deirdre weighed in on some other style trends that could be prematurely ageing women over 50, speaking to GB News about more looks middle-aged ladies should bid farewell to.

The expert claimed that women over 50 can look 10 years younger by saying goodbye to ageing clothing items, slamming them as "baggy and saggy".

She also claimed that one style of skirt is "really ageing" and can "make anyone look older".

In other anti-ageing news, an expert shared how women in their 40s and 50s can combat skin issues such as dryness.

A skin doctor explained: "Post menopause, the skin becomes incredibly dry [as] you lose oestrogen. Oestrogen is a humectant, a water magnet, [so] you lose your water magnets.

"The whole body becomes dry - your eyes will dry, your mouth feels dry, your skin feels dry, your vagina feels dry. Everything feels dry."

For women struggling with dry skin, the expert shared two tips for reducing the appearance of crow's feet and fine lines during menopause.
