The foods you eat can make a big difference to how your skin ages

Having clear, dewy skin is often referred to as "glass skin" and achieving this can make Britons look younger.

While there are plenty of skin care products that will help turn back the clock, an expert explained why what we eat is just as important for our appearance.

Everyone knows eating fruits and vegetables is important for good health, but the vitamins in these foods are also key for glowing skin.

Experts at Fresha said foods such as carrots, papaya and avocados can help give a brighter appearance.

They said: "Vegetables such as carrots can help keep the skin safe from free radicals and have a high water content, which can flush out toxins and bring out a natural glow on the face.

"Papaya is good for skin brightening and contains an enzyme papain, which can help eliminate dark spots.

"Avocados are also beneficial for reducing inflammation as they include oleic acid."

Avocados are a source of healthy fats. A study published in the National Library of Medicine looked at women who consumed healthy fat in the form of flax seeds.

It found those who ate more of the fatty food over a 12-week period noticed skin that was more "hydrated and smoother".

The experts agreed with the benefits, stating: "Upping healthy fats in your diet can help promote glowy, clear skin.

"Cold-water fish such as salmon or sardines are the perfect healthy fat due to their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation, and contain antioxidant vitamin E."

As well as eating well, drinking plenty of water is key for a dewy face.

They said: "Drinking more water keeps your body hydrated and helps maintain skin elasticity."

Maintaining skin elasticity makes wrinkles less visible and gives us plumper skin.

As well as looking after the skin, there are other ways Britons can stay looking young as they age.

A "vital" tip can help you avoid "thin and unhealthy" hair as you age. Hair that is thicker and fuller can contribute to a more youthful appearance.
