Weather maps show the UK hit could be hit with snow as colder weather creeps back after an unreasonably warm February

Britons have been warned heavy snow could batter the UK with up to 3cm an hour to fall this weekend.

New weather maps have shown that this week could see the UK hit with snow as colder weather creeps back.

February has seen mild weather conditions so far but weather experts have warned the UK could see a bitterly cold start to Spring, with snow and temperatures far into to the minus numbers expected at the start of March.

This is a result of a stratospheric Polar vortex which is being pushed off the North Pole and a sudden stratospheric warming event set to take place in the next week.

The effects of this will likely not be felt for three weeks, but a new weather front looks set to bring snow earlier than expected.

Despite the forecast, the snow is unlikely to settle as much of the UK will see temperatures well above freezing.

The Met Office’s outlook for the weekend forecasts “rather changeable” conditions with “outbreaks of rain across central and southern areas on Saturday, then more confined to the north, as well as western hills, on Sunday and Monday. Generally mild”.

Scotland and the north of England will see the majority of the snow, with Aberdeen and Inverness seeing the worst of it.

Manchester will see as much as 2.5cm of snow.

The rest of the UK is likely to see rain and trickles of snow throughout the day.

Despite the forecast, the snow is unlikely to settle as much of the UK will see temperatures well above freezing.

London and the south will remain around 10C for much of the day.

Parts of Scotland will see temperatures drop to -1Cbut only temporarily, rising to slightly warmer temperatures of 1C and 2C.

Strong winds have been flagged as posing a potential danger to life.

The Met Office yesterday issued an urgent weather warning, issuing a report that said: “A deep area of low pressure is expected to impact much of northern Britain through Friday.

“Winds will increase from west to east, with gusts of 55-65 mph likely, and locally as high as 70-75 mph for exposed coasts and hills. Winds will gradually through Friday afternoon and evening.”

It added that there is “a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris”.
