You can organise your group messages much more easily

  • WhatsApp just added three new features to your group chats
  • You can now add member tags to assign a role to people in a group
  • Create text stickers as an alternative to sending an emoji
  • Set event reminders to keep everyone in the loop with a special notification
  • The updates are available now and rolling out gradually to everyone

WhatsApp has rolled out three new features to make it solve a common headache with group chats.

The chat app, owned by Meta — the same parent company behind Instagram and Facebook, has added so-called "member tags" to help identify yourself in group chats, as well as special text stickers, and event reminders so you'll never forget about upcoming plans organised in a chat.

"Group chats on WhatsApp make it easier to stay connected with the people in your life, no matter what device they own – whether it’s sharing New Year’s resolutions, preparing for that special celebration you have coming up, or planning to win your football league," the WhatsApp team explained in a blog post.

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in the world — over 3.3 billion global users — and it's constantly releasing new additions and updates for you to enjoy.

The messaging platform recently launched 9 new features at the tail end of last year. They also rolled out new, timely updates to help you celebrate New Year's, no matter where you were celebrating.

Here's a breakdown of how you can apply each of these new enhancements to help boost your group chats.

WhatsApp has just released new group member tags and text stickers to help organise your chats and add more personality to the messages you're sending

First off, "member tags" are custom labels that appear below your name to let everyone in the group know what role you play within that chat.

For example, if you're on a sports team, you could be marked as "Goalkeeper," or if you're placed in your child's school chat, you might be tagged as "Sophie's Mum." This is especially helpful if you're juggling several group messages at once and want to avoid sending a text to the wrong bunch.

It's a helpful bit of extra clarification as WhatsApp expands beyond just being a chat app for friends and family to keep in touch, becoming the go-to place for communities, school reunions, wedding parties, and other events that might previously have been managed via Facebook Events.

To add a bit of personality to your messaging, you can now add Text Stickers.

When you want to add one, just type whatever you want into the Sticker Search bar, and it'll turn your words into a proper sticker. Even better, you can save these creations straight to your sticker packs so you don't need to constantly remake them. This could be a great alternative to your use of emojis in standard messages.

Finally, you can set new reminders. For instance, when you create a group event, you can now set personalised advance notifications for everyone invited. This means whether you're planning a surprise birthday bash or organising the weekly pub quiz, everyone gets a helpful heads-up to arrive on time.

If you don't see these new features popping up on the platform quite yet, hang tight, as they're rolling out to everyone gradually.
