Expect faster Wi-Fi connections from the BT-owned broadband firm

EE will bring its flagship Wi-Fi 7 router to more broadband users across the UK in a major shake-up.

The BT-owned firm already sends its top-of-the-line router to anyone who signs up for its top-end 1.6Gbps full-fibre broadband. However, EE could soon offer the flagship kit with its 500Mbps and 900Mbps plans too, sources told The Sun. Prices for these packages start from a lower £35.99 a month (500Mbps) and top out at £40.99 (900Mbps).

The Wi-Fi upgrade will be available to new and existing EE Broadband customers.

The catch? This upgraded wireless router won't come for free, sources within EE told The Sun. Exact pricing and release date for the Wi-Fi 7 upgrade are unknown, so we'll need to wait a few weeks to find out what EE has planned.

EE already offers the ability to add its Wi-Fi 7 router to any of its full-fibre plans for an additional £10 a month. For that, you'll also be sent up to 4 extenders to ensure every corner of your home has full bars of signal. There's no need to recontract, but you'll lose access to the faster Wi-Fi 7 speeds if you cancel the add-on from your plan.

EE says its blistering-fast Wi-Fi 7 router unlocks 2x faster speeds than Wi-Fi 6 technology, which is the standard used by most other UK broadband suppliers. If the BT-owned firm fails to deliver a minimum speed of 100Mbps in every room of your house — you'll get £100 back. Its speediest 1.6Gbps plan comes with WiFi Enhancer service at no extra cost too

Given the purported move to make Wi-Fi 7 standard on 500Mbps and 900Mbps broadband packages, we'd expect that £10 fee to drop slightly. It could be closer to other optional add-ons available from EE Broadband.

For example, WiFi Enhancer costs £5 per month for new and existing EE users and prioritises certain traffic on your broadband connection based on either Work Mode, Game Mode, or Stream Mode. It applies to all devices connected to your Wi-Fi network and should eliminate buffering on the activities you've picked.

Switch to Sky's fastest full-fibre broadband and upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 router

Sky is offering ultra-fast broadband to the 4.5 million homes on its full-fibre network. These will be the fastest broadband speeds offered by any nationwide provider in the UK, with downloads up to 5Gbps — that's 22x speedier than the average household speed of 223Mbps, as measured by Ofcom. These speeds will be beamed throughout your home with the all-new Sky Gigafast+ hub with Wi-Fi 7 technology

Vodafone has launched a new premium Pro Broadband package that ships with its latest (and fastest) Wi-Fi 7 router. You'll also benefit from a back-up internet connection, powered by Vodafone's 4G network, if there's a broadband outage in your area. Until now, the fastest router offered by Vodafone shipped with Wi-Fi 6E.

Wi-Fi 7 isn't just about faster wireless downloads, it unlocks more reliable connections too. That's because it can handle more devices at once than earlier Wi-Fi standards, which is critical given the dizzying number of gadgets — from video doorbells to smart thermostats — powered-on in most homes these days.

ee announces its new plans in an event space with ee branding on the wall and logos everywhere EE PRESS OFFICE |

EE rebooted its brand two years ago, with new products and discounts for customers who bundle packages from both BT and EE

EE teamed up with Qualcomm — the US manufacturer behind the chipsets inside the latest smartphones from Samsung, Motorola, and OnePlus, to name just a few — for the internals inside its new Wi-Fi 7 Smart Hub Pro. On the back, there's four 2.5 gigabit ethernet ports to unlock the fastest speeds over a wired connection.

There's also a smaller Smart Wi-Fi Pro to extend Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home and eliminate any dead zones that might exist, like at the bottom of the garden or attic.

With the new kit installed, EE says you'll benefit from gigabit-capable Wi-Fi throughout the home. If you're using both of the all-new EE hubs together together in your home, the BT-owned brand will include a minimum of 100Mbps connection in every room — with a money back guarantee.

If you missed the announcement, EE became the first nationwide broadband provider to unleash superfast Wi-Fi 7 speeds into homes last summer. The popular telecom, which BT acquired in 2015 for an eye-watering £12.5 billion, re-engineered its Wi-Fi router from the ground up to enable faster wireless speeds and improved reliability.

Although EE is owned by BT, if you want access to the next-generation Wi-Fi router, you must switch to an EE contract.

It's all part of a massive shake-up across the company, rolled out last year, that puts EE front and centre. Openreach, also owned and operated by BT, is steadily upgrading 26 million homes ahead of its 2026 deadline.

Ofcom figures published one year ago show that 8 out of 10 homes across the UK can now access eye-wateringly fast gigabit broadband speeds. That's a lot of people who would benefit from the faster wireless speeds enabled by Wi-Fi 7.

EE might've been first with its flagship Wi-Fi 7 router, but its broadband rivals have been quick to catch up. Vodafone followed in EE's footsteps with its own Wi-Fi 7 upgrade for full-fibre broadband users, and most recently, Sky Broadband unveiled its own next-generation wireless router and download speeds up to 5Gbps.

Sky says its full-fibre broadband cables aren't just quick, but they're also the "most reliable broadband technology" in the UK. For the first time, the British broadcaster is now taking orders for its top-tier Gigafast+ full-fibre broadband plans.

If your address is already hooked up to these speeds, you'll be able to enjoy a maximum of 5Gbps — faster than you'll be able to access from the likes of Virgin Media, Vodafone, or EE.

As such, Sky has leapfrogged the competition to become the fastest major internet brand in the UK.

For comparison, EE home broadband plans max-out with download speeds of 1.6Gbps, while the guaranteed minimum speed will be 1.3Gbps. Upload speeds will top out at 115Mbps. For context, the average download speed for UK household broadband was measured at 69.4Mbps by Ofcom last year.

Speaking at the time of the announcement, EE CEO Marc Allera said: "Wi-Fi 7 for the home is another first for EE customers, giving households higher speeds and better capacity to support devices in every corner of their home. Together, these new technologies bring EE customers the best networks in and out of the home."
