The defender won three Premier League titles during his spell at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have re-signed Jonny Evans on a short-term contract, eight years after the defender left the club.

The centre-back previously won three Premier League titles while playing under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Evans has been without a club since leaving Leicester at the end of last season following the Foxes' relegation to the Championship.

He's been training with United in recent days and, now, the club have confirmed he'll be available for upcoming pre-season matches.

A statement said: "Experienced defender Jonny Evans has signed a short-term deal to enable him to take part in Manchester United’s upcoming pre-season games in Edinburgh and San Diego.

"The Academy graduate had been training with the Under-21s whilst considering his options, following his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season.

"As part of the Academy training programme, he has also taken part in a number of first-team sessions and impressed Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff.

"Evans, who has been capped 102 times by Northern Ireland, will travel to Edinburgh as part of the group to face Lyon on Wednesday."

It continued: "Jonny will then join up with the Academy group that will travel to San Diego, while the first-team squad are in New York."

United's short-term deal for Evans has come out of the blue.

And should he continue to impress, it's possible the Red Devils will sign the Northern Ireland international on a permanent basis.

Evans was once seen as United's future.

However, he departed in 2015 having failed to prove his worth to Louis van Gaal.

Since leaving United, Evans has starred for Leicester - helping the Foxes win the FA Cup in 2020 with victory over Chelsea in the final that year.

Several United defenders are facing uncertain futures at the club amid Evans' temporary return.
Brandon Williams is likely to be sold, as well as Alex Telles.

And uncertainty continues to surround the future of Harry Maguire, who was recently stripped of the captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag.

Meanwhile, in 2021, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Evans should have been kept by United.

"You know, Jonny Evans should be a Manchester United player now, of course," said the Norwegian.

"But sometimes football takes you other places, the changes in management."

United have already made one signing this summer, with Mason Mount moving from Chelsea in a huge £55million deal.

The England international has been given the No 7 shirt previously worn by club icons such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best.

And United have also agreed a fee with Inter Milan for goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is primed to arrive as a replacement for David De Gea.

They want a new forward, despite top target Harry Kane appearing increasingly likely to leave Tottenham for German giants Bayern Munich.

Rasmus Hojlund is now in their sights, though Atalanta will only let the Denmark international go for a huge fee in the region of £86m - a price that would make him United's joint-second most-expensive signing of all time.
