The American will be hoping to win the tournament on Sunday

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler may have dominated on the course at Quail Hollow, but he struggled during his post-round interview on Saturday.

The American was hit by an uncontrollable coughing fit that delayed his conversation with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis.

"Sorry, I'm just nervous," Scheffler joked after Balionis made light of allergies affecting players in the current weather conditions.

When asked about his performance, Scheffler began to answer before coughing again: "Yeah, I hung in there really well today. I got off to a (coughs), sorry."

Balionis intervened, saying "We can get you some water," which Scheffler gratefully accepted before continuing the interview.

Despite his interview difficulties, Scheffler's performance on the course was nothing short of masterful. The 28-year-old shot an impressive 65 in the third round of the PGA Championship, leaving him at 11-under-par overall.

His commanding display has given him a three-stroke advantage over Sweden's Alex Noren heading into Sunday's final round.

The American now stands as the clear favourite to claim what would be his third major title and first PGA Championship crown.

His position was further strengthened as rivals Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm both faltered during the closing stages of their respective third rounds.

Scheffler did manage to compose himself enough to discuss his emotional reaction to birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, which were rare displays from the typically reserved golfer.

"It was an important time in the round," he explained.

"I wanted to finish off the round the right way, and I was able to gain some momentum there with the eagle on 14. I hit some good shots down the stretch, and it was nice to be able to take advantage of that."

His strong finish came after building momentum with an eagle on the 14th hole, helping him extend his lead over the chasing pack.

Despite his commanding lead, Scheffler remained humble when asked what he needed to do to secure victory in Sunday's final round.

"More good golf," he replied matter-of-factly. "I have some great players chasing me on the leaderboard, and it's going to take another really good round."

The world's best player clearly isn't taking anything for granted, recognising the quality of the field behind him at Quail Hollow.

With a three-shot cushion and the form he displayed on Saturday, Scheffler appears well-positioned to add the PGA Championship to his growing collection of major titles, provided he can maintain his focus for one more round.
