Dan Wootton: Wayne Couzens should never see daylight again

After committing one of the most heinous and cruel and trust defying crimes imaginable, the temptation is to say bring back the death penalty for that monster Wayne Couzens.

But the whole life sentence handed out today to the police officer who murdered Sarah Everard is the best possible punishment for the revolting scumbag.

He will never again experience freedom. He will never again hug his family, who he has also revoltingly destroyed.

And the words of Sarah’s brave mother and father will ricochet in his brain for the rest of his pitiful life.

For a serving officer to exploit lockdown Covid powers to commit such a crime makes me feel physically sick.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick has said Wayne Couzens' crimes have "brought shame" on the force.

His QC was wrong to say there are worse crimes. There are not.

But a state sanctioned death would provide an easy and early escape for this sorry excuse of a man, who has decades left to rot in jail.

Having had a family member killed by a scumbag, I understand the temptation to want vengeance in the form of his life.

However, too often over our lifetime have we seen miscarriages of justice, where innocent men have been found guilty.

We cannot take that risk.

But as far as Wayne Couzens is concerned, this man should never see daylight again.

He is the worst type of animal who should be treated as such behind bars.
