Associate director of Belize’s Institute of Archaeology, Allan Moore, took the pair around the site.

Mr Moore told the royals during the tour: “It’s like looking at the inside of Buckingham Palace. This is just a small fraction of what we have here.”

He showed them some ancient carvings as well as the area where Mayans used to play ball games.

The pair, who were accompanied by their own personal photographer, looked in awe of the buildings.

As the couple climbed the steep steps up to to the site, Mr Moore explained how “people often like to try and run up here".

William replied: “What they race? You must be very fit if you are doing this three times a week Allan.”
