Snow blast hits UK with North Pole temps of -8C still to come

Overnight today, it is expected temperatures could plunge down further to -8C

Flurries of snow have hit parts of the UK as temperatures plummet from 20C to -4C in four days.

The Met Office issued a warning as they expect ice to cover a large swathe of eastern Scotland, north-east England and Yorkshire on Thursday


The warning states: “Snow and hail showers could lead to icy surfaces, with possible travel disruption."

Short bursts of snowfall have also been seen in London this morning and there are reports of settling in Leeds and Sheffield.

It comes after many areas basked in glorious sunshine and highs of 20C last week.

Councils in Newcastle City, North Tyneside and Gateshead have all introduced their severe weather emergency protocols - which includes services to help people who are sleeping rough try to stay safe.

Overnight today, it is expected temperatures could plunge down further to -8C in the Scottish Highlands and -5C in rural parts of northern England.

Gusty winds, with speeds of up to 40mph have also been predicted.

The forecast for Friday reads: "Sunny spells and further wintry showers, most frequent along parts of the north and east coasts. A more organised area of rain affecting parts of western Scotland and Northern Ireland."

Over the weekend, there will be more persistent rain or showers, but it is expected to be less cold on Sunday and Monday.
