Remainers took to Twitter to complaint about the ingredient listing on its £4 over-ready chicken crown

Morrisons supermarket has apologised after it labelled a British chicken as containing "non-EU salt and pepper".

Remainers took to Twitter to complain about the ingredient listing on Morrisons £4 oven-ready chicken crown - even leading to threats of boycott from some customers.

The supermarket group has backtracked on the labelling, telling customers the non-EU part of the packaging was a mistake.

In a tweet, Morrisons said: “The wording on the packaging is an error for which we apologise. We are changing the packaging immediately."

A spokesperson for the supermarket said: ''Our chicken label is adhering to British packaging regulations, however we will be redesigning it to make it clear this is not a political commentary.''

One angry customer tweeted: “Tell me @Morrisons that this is not real. Your response will dictate whether or not I ever shop at your stores again.”

David Bright replied: “I’m done with shopping @Morrisons.. I can live with union flags on bananas, but the gratuitous slight on the EU is too much.”

Another added: "Have I missed this new trend for our groceries to celebrate their exclusion of any EU condiments?"

Others jumped to Morrisons' defence, saying: “I’m really unsure what the problem is? We are all supposed to be looking at air miles, local is the best option surely? For our pockets and the environment, be that supermarkets or local independent shops.”
