Up to seven million people could be displaced by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, a European Commission expert has warned.
The “large-scale invasion” in Ukraine has entered a sixth day as Russian forces continue their attempts to capture the country’s capital, Kyiv.
As the violence spreads even further throughout Ukraine, more and more people are doing there upmost to leave the country.
The UN estimates that up to 368,000 Ukrainians have already left the country, while European Commission Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Janez Lenarcic warns that as many as seven million people could end up being displaced by the war.
Lenarcic warned: “We are witnessing what could become the largest humanitarian crisis on our European Continent in many, many years.”
Britain eased its visa rules on Sunday, meaning that people who are currently settled in the UK will be able to bring immediate family members from Ukraine into the country.
Family members who are eligible to apply for these visas are a spouse or cival partner, an unmarried partner of at least two years, a parent or their child if one is under the age of 18, or adult relatives who are carers.
Despite the change, some people have called for more to be done to allow more Ukrainians to enter the country.
But Armed Forces Minister James Heappey has backed the government’s new rules.
Mr Heappey told GB News: "The offer that is already been made is a generous one given the size of Ukrainian diaspora in the UK, that covers a lot of people in its own right.”
“My instinct is that this is an evolving area of policy.”
