A loud bang was heard in Whitehall this afternoon, with streets surrounding the area being cordoned off to the public.
The area between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square was closed while the Met Police investigated what they believed to be a "suspicious package".
In a later statement, the MPS for Westminster confirmed that the item was found to be non-suspicious, and they thanked the public for their cooperation.
GB News presenter Darren McCaffrey shared a picture from the scene, claiming the noise sounded like a "controlled explosion on a suspect package".
A statement from MPS reads: "Road closures and cordons are being lifted after a suspicious package was dealt with at #ParliamentStreet #Westminster.
"The item was found to be non suspicious. We thank the public for their co-operation while we dealt with the item."
