Missiles and bricks were hurled at passengers onboard buses as yobs cause chaos during "Mischief Night" in the UK.

A woman was getting off an Arriva bus in Merseyside when a slab was lobbed through the window just metres behind her last night.

Thomas told the Liverpool Echo: "Luckily myself, my little dog and another lady were sat at the front of the bus.

“The window got put through in the middle part of the bus on the emergency door window.

"I just heard the window smashing and when I was getting off I reported it to the driver because he never heard it, and he rang through to his depo.

"I’m fine and so was the other lady. There's just no need for it, where are these children's parents?"

But Mischief Night yobs wreaked further havoc as around 16 different Arriva and Stagecoach bus services were either cancelled or diverted.

The two bus companies revealed routes were changed as drivers and passengers were not “safe”.

Mischief Night is a tradition in the North West of England dating back to as early as the 1830s.

The tradition initially saw youngsters swap shopkeepers' signs or throw cabbage stalks at neighbours.

However, youngsters appear to have taken a more sinister approach with pranks today.

A spokesperson from Arriva North West said: "Due to incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage to a number of vehicles across Merseyside tonight, some services may be significantly disrupted until November 1.

"The safety of our team, passengers & vehicles is paramount and we continue to work with travel-safe partners."

In a separate incident in Kirkby, Stagecoach confirmed: “Owing to youths throwing missiles at our buses on Bewley Drive in Kirkby we will be diverting away from driver and passenger safety.
