Donald Trump's tax returns were released after a long battle between the former president and the committee

Donald Trump has lashed out in fury and threatened “horrible things” after his tax returns were released.

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives committee was ready to release six years of former President Donald Trump's tax returns to the public on Friday just days before Republicans take control of the chamber.

Release of Trump's returns for 2015 to 2020 will end the multi-year battle between the former Republican president and Democratic lawmakers.

Trump did not release his taxes after taking office in 2017 and sued the committee in an attempt to keep them private.

However in November a Supreme Court ruling voted in favour of the committee, requiring the former president to release his tax returns.

The records show Trump's income and tax liability fluctuated dramatically between 2015 and 2020, during his first presidential bid and subsequent term in office.

They also show that Trump and his wife Melania claimed large deductions and losses and paid little or no income tax in several of those years.

Responding, Trump fumed at the release of his taxes. In a statement released by CBS, he said: “The Democrats should have never done it, the supreme court should have never approved it, and it’s going to lead to horrible things for so many people.

“The great USA divide will now grow far worse. The radical, left Democrats have weaponised everything, but remember, that is a dangerous two-way street!

“The ‘Trump’ tax returns once again show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises.”
