While there will still be cases, hospital treatments and deaths, it will be “nothing like we saw over the last two years”

The Covid-19 pandemic is entering its endgame and life can continue “fairly normally," according to an Imperial College Professor who spoke to GB News this morning.

Professor of Primary Care & Public Health, Azeem Majeed, reassured viewers “we are now in an endemic phase” and while there will still be cases, hospital treatments and deaths, it will be “nothing like we saw over the last two years".

Professor Majeed's comments come on the second anniversary of Covid-19 being declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation.

Talking on GB News’ Breakfast with Stephen and Anne, he said: “So, the levels are where we can cope with and carry on with our lives normally.

"Not quite back to normal, but fairly normal compared to what we’ve had over the last few years with various lockdowns and the measures that were brought into place."

Weekly Covid deaths have drastically decreased, with a 48 percent decline in England and Wales to what was reported during the peak of the Omicron wave of infections.

766 deaths that mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in the last week of February according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This is compared to 1,484 deaths reported the month prior in January.

Prof Majeed, who works as a general practitioner in South London, made the reassuring comments despite recent confirmation of new Covid strain, Deltacron.

Cases of Deltacron, a hybrid of the Delta and Omicron variants, have already been confirmed in northern France and the US with suspected cases reported in Denmark and the Netherlands.

The variant is under current investigation, but scientists have already stressed that due to such high levels of immunity in the population, it is not cause for great concern.

Maria van Kerkhove, the Covid technical lead for the World Health Organisation, has said that recombinants were “to be expected, especially with intense circulation of Omicron & Delta” and that her team were “tracking and discussing” the variant.
