Burton fire sparks 'avoid area' warning as police scramble to huge blaze

A huge fire has broken out in Stretton, Burton, West Midlands Ambulance Service reports.

Footage shows black smoke billowing from a large warehouse-like building, reported to be an animal feed factory, and flames can be seen breaking out of its roof.


Nearby residents are being urged by emergency services to stay safe by shutting their windows and doors while fire crews work to extinguish the blaze.

Locals have been warned their water supply could be affected and drivers have been asked to avoid the area and take alternate routes where possible as Derby Road is closed to the A38 and Hawkins Lane.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police and the fire and rescue service, said: "Police were called shortly after 8am on Thursday, 31 March, to a business premises, in Derby Road in Stretton following reports of a fire.

"Officers attended as did firefighters from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. No one was reported injured and all members of staff have been accounted for.

"Derby Road is closed to the A38 and Hawkins Lane. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and take alternative routes where possible. Police remain at the scene assisting with the road closure.

"Nearby residents may see their water supply affected while fire crews work to extinguish the fire. Residents are being advised to keep their windows and doors closed. We thank you for your continued patience and understanding at this time."

The blaze has led to chaos at the nearby railway, as train lines have been blocked causing journeys to be delayed or cancelled.

Train operating company, Cross Country said on Twitter: "Due to a fire on a property near the railway between Burton on Trent and Derby, all lines are currently blocked. Services will be delayed and/or cancelled."

In a statement on Twitter, West Midlands Ambulance Service say: "We are currently at the scene of a large fire in Stretton, Burton, supporting fire colleagues.

"There are no reported injuries. If you live/work in the area, please be advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid driving through the area."

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Services reiterated the advice on their Twitter account adding that, "Members of the public should not attend the scene".

They also confirmed that "Derby Road is currently closed and drivers should avoid the area."

Staffordshire Police also issued an alert on Twitter: "For those living in and around Stretton, please be aware of an ongoing incident with a large fire our fire colleagues are dealing with.

"Locals are urged to keep themselves safe by keeping their windows and doors closed. Do not attend the scene."
