As Britain prepares to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, GB News asks its members should the Government do more to help our armed forces veterans?

Celebrations kick off tomorrow to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, with four days of commemorative events kicking off with a military procession and flypast and end with a concert at the Horse Guard Parade.

The Government has announced that a two-minute national silence will be held to remember and thank those who fought for our freedom during the Second World War.

It will be marked on Thursday, 8 May at 12 noon by all UK Government departments, which will also fly the Union Flag at full-mast.

The Government has also announced that British pubs and bars will be allowed to stay open for longer on the May 8, with many Britons hoping to honour the nation's war heroes with a pint.

Pub hours have been relaxed before for occasions of “exceptional national significance” such as the Euro 2024 final and major royal celebrations.

Responding to the decision, Sir Keir Starmer said: “As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the whole country should come together to remember the incredible sacrifices made by the wartime generation and to celebrate the peace and freedom they secured for us all.

“Keeping our pubs open for longer will give people the opportunity to join in celebrations and raise a glass to all of the men and women who served their country, both overseas and at home.”

The celebration will likely be one of the last chances of many of the veterans who fought in the war to join in on the commemorations held in their honour.
