Around 32 per cent of Start to Save (Issue 2) accounts were opened by those aged between 18 and 39, according to Nationwide.

Winners will have the money put directly into their account later this month.

Customers had to save between £25 and £50, every month from August 2022 to January 2023.

The account hopes to help individuals who struggle to save, with 10,000 people saying they had started saving since starting the scheme.

According to research from the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS), nine million people across the UK have no savings and another five million have less than £100.

£28 million was saved in total and each member saved an average of £172.

The draw took place on the 21st of February and winners will be notified from the 28th.

The money will then arrive in the winning accounts from March 1.

Director of Retail Products at Nationwide Building Society, Tom Riley, said: “Start to Save was first set up with the aim of encouraging those who could save, but who hadn’t done so before, to get into a savings habit.

“So, even with the current cost of living challenges facing many, it’s encouraging to see that there are people that have been able to build up rainy day funds and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to boost the savings pot of more than 900 members with an extra £250 through our prize draw.”

There are two more prize draws planned which will be carried out later this year.

In order to be eligible for the draws, Nationwide customers with a Start to Save (Issue 2) account must save between £25 and £50 in their account a month over a six month period.

The next prize draw is on August 22 and the final one will take place in a year’s time.
