Britons can claim up to £100 free cash for food and energy bills

Households in the UK who are struggling to stay on top of bills can get financial help from their local council.

The money comes as part of a new £842million scheme, the Household Support Fund (HSF) which aims to help those struggling.

The project is provided by the Department for Work and Pensions and a sum of money has been shared between councils in England.

Each council then decide how to distribute their share of the fund among residents.

The amount of money a household is eligible for depends on which part of the country they live in, but in most cases is offered to people on benefits or on a low income.

The programme was due to end in March this year but was extended until April 2024 meaning households can get more support.

Residents who live in Wokingham can get up to £100 in support from their local council.

Eligible households can get £100 in cash vouchers to go towards food, energy, fuel and other essential costs.

According to the council website, help is "open to anyone struggling with rising cost of living as well as people in receipt of benefits".

Proof that a household is on a low income or receiving certain benefits is likely to be required.

And anyone who has applied for the previous round of funding can still apply again.

The amount Britons are entitled to will vary depending on the area, with people living in Torridge able to receive up to £1,000 in free cash.

The distribution of support will also vary with some councils handing out vouchers, and others making bank transfers to eligible residents.

Some local authorities have not yet opened their funding.

Those wanting to apply for extra support are advised to find their local council and see what their eligibility criteria is for receiving help through the fund.
