The skin’s lipid profile diminishes more quickly when the body reaches 50, signalling the need for additional hydration.
Fortunately, adding natural ingredients to your skin care can support the lipid barrier and promote better elasticity.
Ingredients like rosehip oil are touted as an anti-ageing solution because of their hydrating properties.
Certain professionals, such as Jill Lynn, believe the moisturising component of plant oils is as important as collagen production which happens deeper within.

The esthetician said she would choose to use lipid serums for the rest of her life if she could have only one skin care product - barring a good cleanser and sunscreen.
“If I was told you can just have one other thing that you can use on your skin forever and ever, that one thing that I would choose above anything else would be a lipid serum," she said.
“For years I have chosen light oil blends that absorb into my skin beautifully over a creamy moisturiser.
“I use them not only to feed and nourish my skin but to moisturise it. It’s just a preference really. I feel like they are just as important as vitamin A or vitamin C.
“The natural oils in our skin give a natural glow and a certain luminosity,” she continued.
Skin care enthusiasts have claimed that ingredients in rosehip oil naturally boost the body’s collagen and elastin production.
This is partly down to vitamin A, the active ingredient in highly touted retinol products.
A YouTube clip by Kirsty Koby, which highlighted these benefits, was met with hundreds of positive remarks from users who have trialled the oil themselves.
“This oil really helped get rid of my eczema,” one person wrote.
Another shared: “I swear by rosehip oil. It cleared up my acne scarring and my skin also looks so healthy."

Because the fine molecular structure of plant oils allows them to be readily absorbed, the body is better protected against the outdoor environment.
According to Jill, other ingredients that harbour these properties include grape seed and pumpkin seed oil.
The aesthetician recommends using several of these ingredients on the skin interchangeably throughout the year.
The oils can be applied straight to the face with clean hands once the skin has been cleansed.
