Electric vehicles cost less when charged at home compared to petrol and diesel cars

Drivers across the UK could pay as little as £3 to travel on some of the nation's most popular road trip routes by switching to an electric vehicle.

New research has revealed that nine out of 10 popular road trips would cost millions of drivers less when charged at home.

With the AA predicting that 20 million journeys will be taken this bank holiday, experts have now urged drivers to take advantage of the potential savings.

The research showed that EV drivers could save up to 88 per cent on travel costs compared to those using petrol vehicles on the same routes by using OVO's Charge Anytime rate.

Despite these potential savings, only a third of those planning road trips this bank holiday will use electric or hybrid vehicles, according to research.

When looking at the top destinations drivers will be taking this weekend and potential savings, the Lake District Loop tops the list with the 150-mile circular route costing EV drivers just £2.63 when using OVO's Charge Anytime rate, representing a saving of up to £23.18 compared to petrol vehicles.

Meanwhile, the 60-mile Peak District Scenic Drive comes in second place, costing only £1.05 in an EV, while the 95-mile UNESCO-listed Jurassic Coast route from Exmouth to Swanage would cost just £1.66.

OVO's Charge Anytime rate costs 7p per kWh with drivers able to save around £20 on average across the popular road trips.

Alex Thwaites, Director of EV at OVO, said: "The issues that plagued EV drivers five years ago are being tackled by improved tech and charging infrastructure.

"Public charger installations increased by 37 per cent in the last year alone and you can travel up to 300 miles on a single EV charge now - more than double the amount of miles of the majority of the UK's favourite road trips."

Other popular routes include the Yorkshire Moors Coast (£2.28), the Cotswolds Circuit (£1.79), and the Snowdonia and North Wales Explorer (£1.31).

The North Coast 500, which spans 516 miles across the Scottish Highlands, would cost significantly less in an EV at £34.33 with a home charger, making it £54.42 cheaper than using a petrol vehicle.

OVO explained that to encourage drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles, it offers rewards on its Beyond platform, which allows customers to bank up to 2,400 EV miles for free to use when they eventually make the transition.

Thwaites added: "Last year my family took a road trip from Warwickshire to he beach town of Weston-Super-Mare, we stopped for a hot chocolate treat for the kids and a speedy 20-minute charge on the way home and that was it. A 250-mile round trip made simple."

According to the AA, as millions of journeys set off this weekend, it estimates that around 50 per cent of trips will only travelling 50 miles in distance.

This concentrated amount could be focused around local destinations such as retail parks with drivers warned to expect delays in these areas.

Shaun Jones, AA Patrol of the Year, shared: "With the upcoming bank holiday, we anticipate a significant increase in traffic. Drivers should ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting off – Check tyres, oil and coolant levels and make sure you have enough fuel or EV charge for your journey.

“We also encourage drivers taking longer journeys to take regular breaks to avoid fatigue and keep everyone refreshed. By following these tips, we can all contribute to a safer and more pleasant travel experience during the bank holiday weekend."
