The 63-year-old admitted he was "embarrassed" during Sunday's episode

Jeremy Clarkson has taken to social media to address a slip-up he made during the latest episode of ITV's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

In Sunday's instalment, Clarkson was called upon by one contestant, Ivo, who hoped to bag £8,000 on their way towards the £1million jackpot.

Clarkson had just delivered the teaser: "Mark Drakeford was re-appointed to which position in 2021?"

The options available to the budding quizzer were Attorney General, First Minister of Wales, Head of the Civil Service, or First Minister of Northern Ireland.

The contestant decided to ask the host, prompting Clarkson to respond: "Okay, here's what I think... not much.

"I've never heard of Mark Drakeford. I'm just - I'm embarrassed. I just haven't got a clue and I'm afraid that is my final answer."

As the player contemplated what to do next, Clarkson uttered: "Why do I not know that?"

The answer was soon unveiled as First Minister of Wales, although the player had to use a Phone a Friend and a 50-50 to correctly pick it out.

However, as soon as Clarkson's response went out on air, several viewers were quick to question the former Top Gear man.

"So Clarkson doesn’t know who Mark Drakeford is - or where Gosforth is? Don’t let him anywhere near Wales…. or Tyne & Wear! #whowantstobeamillionaire," one viewer fumed on X.

A second quipped: "#whowantstobeamillionaire I wonder if mark drakeford has ever heard of Jeremy Clarkson.."

While a third weighed in: "What is Jeremy Clarkson on tonight?! First he didn’t have a clue who Mark Drakeford is, and then he thought Gosforth is in Leeds! #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire."

"How has no one heard of Mark Drakeford?? #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire," another questioned before a fifth said: "I have no idea who Mark Drakeford is. My parents also don't know who he is. So I don't blame the constantant for having no clue either. #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire."

Clarkson has since taken to X to address the moment, as he posted: "To be clear. This Millionaire was recorded more than a year ago. I know who Drakeford is now.!!!" (sic)

Much of the surprise at Clarkson's response regarding Drakeford may have stemmed from the fact just a matter of weeks ago, he was slamming the Welsh government for its latest policies rolled out for farmers.

Clarkson referenced Drakeford specifically as he let loose in a social media post in February: "The defence mounted by Mr Drakeford over his farming policy in Wales makes no sense.

"Like him, I’m not a farmer but I try to learn about it by listening to people who are. He should do the same."

Clarkson's also hit headlines this week after delivering a blistering take on today's politically correct landscape in his latest column.
