Google's next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI) model wants to know a whole lot more about you.
Gemini, which has superseded the Google Assistant as the go-to AI assistant on Google services, is poised to receive an upgrade that'll let you personalise how much information it can access on you to better help with your day-to-day online activities.
Dubbed Personal Intelligence, you can securely connect your information from apps like Gmail and Google Photos to learn more about you and help with more specific requests. For example, if you’re looking for winter outerwear, it will generate tailored recommendations by analysing photos from winter activities saved in your library. It's pretty nifty as it takes out the generic suggestions you'd otherwise find from platforms like ChatGPT.
This isn't the only update the tech giant has been working on, either. The team over in Silicon Valley has recently released new AI to manage your Gmail, and they're preparing to release an "incredible" new rival to Windows 11.
Here's everything you need to know about how you can put Gemini's Personal Intelligence to good use.

How you can use Gemini's Personal Intelligence
Personal Intelligence has been built with two core strengths in mind — retrieving specific details from your email or photos and providing personalised insights from complex sources.
When you connect your apps to Gemini, it will be able to pull this information for you. The more apps you choose to connect, will equal how personalised Gemini's responses will be to your inquiries.
For example, Josh Woodward, Google's VP across Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio, used Personal Intelligence when searching for new tyres for his 2019 Honda minivan.
By being able to access his Google Photos, Gemini was able to infer that the car is often used for his family's road trips to Oklahoma. So, as a result, it pulled different options for both daily driving and all-weather conditions — complete with ratings and prices for each.

When he needed his license plate number to purchase the tyres, Gemini was also able to pull this information from Google Photos, and it even pulled more details about his vehicle from his Gmail account.
Personal Intelligence is able to be used across several different topics — including books, shows, clothes, and travel.

You can control Gemini's access to your data
For this new feature to work, you'll need to enable Gemini's access to your data. Gemini will only access your data based on the permissions you give it.
As an example, it's set up to guard against any sensitive information, such as your health and won't make any assumptions unless you specifically ask.
If you don't want Gemini to access your Google Photos, but allow permission to retrieve information from your Gmail, you can set this up as well.
Google also emphasises that your photos and other information are not used to train Gemini's Personal Intelligence. In reference to the minivan example provided above, Mr Woodward said, "We don't train our systems to learn your license plate number; we train them to understand that when you ask for one, we can locate it."
To tailor what Personal Intelligence is connected to, you'll need to follow these steps:
- Open Gemini and tap Settings
- Tap Personal Intelligence
- Select Connected Apps (Gmail, Photos, etc.)

If you want to start using these new features, you'll need to wait a bit longer, though. Google is still actively testing out Personal Intelligence with a small group in the US to help iron out any last-minute kinks.
Once it's finally released, it will be available for free across both Android and iOS devices.
