Need a helping hand to manage your Gmail inbox? You're not alone.
Google just launched three updates designed to make writing emails and sorting through unread emails much simpler. Powered by its Gemini 3 model, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant created by the US firm, you'll be able to ask questions about your inbox, get help with writing your emails, and have your most important emails prioritised.
The catch? Not every new feature that relies on Gemini AI will be free to use.
If you want the ability to ask questions about your inbox and have your emails proofread, you'll need to either be a Google AI Pro subscriber (£18.99/month) or an Ultra subscriber (£234.99/month). Both of these subscription tiers offer higher AI usage limits as well as additional file storage.
Here's everything you'll be able to achieve with the help of AI navigating your Gmail inbox.

You can ask your inbox questions
Google is bringing its AI Overviews features to your inbox. You've probably seen these AI-generated summaries surface at the top of a Google search, trying to answer your query in a succinct paragraph.
Google is bringing the same technology to your Gmail. Once you open a lengthy email thread with dozens of replies, Gmail will condense the whole conversation into a neat summary of the key points. It's similar to Apple Intelligence on the latest generation of iPhone models, which can summarise emails and iMessages.
Even better, you can simply ask AI questions about your inbox. Want to know when you booked that flight, or how many people are coming along to that trip? Just type it in, and Gemini pulls up the answer instantly.

Gmail now can now draft replies in an email chain in your voice, so all you need to do is review and send it

Have Gmail help you write
There's a new tool called Help Me Write that lets you polish your emails or create them from scratch.
There's also Suggested Replies, which is a clever upgrade to the old Smart Replies feature, which would give suggestions based on your messages like "Thank you" or "You're Welcome."
With the latest Gemini AI model under the bonnet, this new system promises to be a bit more advanced.
For example, if your aunt messages about bringing cake instead of pie to the family gathering, the system drafts a response that sounds just like you and is much less generic, ready for a quick tweak before sending.
If you need to check over your grammar and spelling, there's a new Proofread feature that's very similar to other services, such as Grammarly.

Get an extra set of hands with a new virtual assistant
You can now have your emails organised for you, thanks to a new AI Inbox. It's like having your own personal assistant sorting through every email.
This clever feature figures out who your VIPs are — the people you email most, your contacts, and those it can work out from your messages. That means urgent stuff like a bill due tomorrow or your dentist appointment floats straight to the top. This particular feature is being tested by a select group before Google opens it up to everyone in the coming months, so stay tuned for that one.

Google is testing out a virtual assistant feature that will organise your inbox for you based on your activity and what seems to be most important, like an upcoming bill due

Right now, these features are launching in the United States, starting with English speakers. According to Google, it'll roll out these new features to more regions globally in the coming months, but there's no confirmation on exactly where or when yet.
