Wrexham have shocked the EFL world after breaking the bank

Wrexham have secured permission to complete a £10million transfer for Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town, establishing their third club-record fee this summer.

The Welsh international forward is travelling to North Wales for medical examinations ahead of finalising the move.

The 27-year-old's acquisition represents another significant investment by Hollywood proprietors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The fee surpasses previous record signings this transfer window, including approximately £4million for Nottingham Forest's Lewis O'Brien and £2.1million for Liberato Cacace from Empoli.

Broadhead would become manager Phil Parkinson's ninth addition during the current transfer period as the newly-promoted Championship club continues its ambitious recruitment drive.

The transfer marks a homecoming for Broadhead, who developed through Wrexham's youth system before pursuing his professional career elsewhere.

The forward had been keen to rejoin his boyhood club, with negotiations initially stalling when a £7.5million agreement was reached.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna delayed the transfer due to injury concerns within his squad and ongoing interest in alternative attacking options.

The situation shifted following Ipswich's loan acquisition of Chuba Akpom from Ajax on Sunday, prompting Wrexham to increase their bid.

Broadhead missed Ipswich's Carabao Cup fixture at Bromley on Tuesday after calling in sick on match day.

Several supporters have expressed frustration about the club's spending priorities on social media platform X.

One fan wrote: "I really don't want to be negative here but it's been over four years since the takeover and we've still not bought any land for a training ground.

"These signings are unbelievable but long term success will be slowed down if we continue to not have our own base."

Another supporter questioned the valuation: "I'm going to be controversial here but that is ridiculous. Yes, he is Welsh and a former youth player but that can't justify that price. If we can't find a better striker for £10m then we need to look at our recruitment."

Additional fans voiced discomfort with the expenditure, with one stating: "I'm not sure I can be comfortable with us making a £10m signing."

Broadhead contributed 23 goals across 83 matches for Ipswich after joining from Everton for £1.5million in January 2023.

The forward played a crucial part in securing consecutive promotions from League One and the Championship.

His involvement diminished last season with only seven Premier League starts as Ipswich returned to the second tier. The player has entered his contract's final year at Portman Road.

Wrexham face West Bromwich Albion at home on Saturday in their second Championship fixture.

Parkinson's team suffered a 2-1 defeat at Southampton in their opening match, surrendering their advantage late after controlling much of the contest.
