The US President said that 'there's no deal until there's a deal' but 'great progress' was made

A peace deal in Ukraine has failed to be agreed following three hours of talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

The Russian leader concluded the press conference by suggesting the next round of talks could be held in Moscow.

After the meeting was over, Mr Putin warned European leaders and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, not to interfere in the "emerging progress".

He said: “We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles, will not make attempts to disrupt the emerging progress through provocations and behind-the-scenes intrigues".

The Russian leader also warned that for the war in Ukraine to come to an end, Russia's concerns must be considered.

He said: “The situation in Ukraine has to do with the fundamental threats to our security.

“To consider all legitimate concerns of Russia and to reinstate a just balance of security in Europe and in the world on the whole.

"I would like to hope that the agreement that we’ve reached together will help us bring closer to that goal and will pave the path towards peace in Ukraine."

Despite a firm peace deal not being reached, Mr Trump said that it was "an extremely productive meeting" and "many points were agreed to".

The US President said that he has "always had a fantastic relationship" with Mr Putin, but this has been put under strain due to investigations into allegations of Russian interference in the run up to the 2016 presidential election.

Mr Putin also claimed that the conflict in Ukraine would never have happened if Mr Trump had been in the White House in 2022.

The American leader has always maintained the belief that a full-scale war would have been avoided had he been in office instead of Joe Biden, which Mr Putin said was correct.

The Russian President revealed that he had pleaded with Mr Biden to avoid allowing the situation to reach a point where “serious consequences in the form of military actions could occur".

Mr Putin added: "I have every reason to believe that by moving along this path, we can reach – and the sooner, the better – the end of the conflict in Ukraine."

The US President confirmed that he would be on the phone to President Zelensky and Nato to detail what has been discussed in the meeting.

He said: “I will call up NATO in a little while. I will call up the various people that I think are appropriate. And I’ll, of course, call up President Zelensky and tell him about today’s meeting. It’s ultimately up to them.

Mr Trump noted that Ukraine must "accept" what was discussed in the Anchorage meeting, but did not disclose specific information relating to the framework for a deal to be made.

Both leaders took no questions from the media following their statements after the meeting, leaving much of the details of their talks unknown.
