Manchester United suffered defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final

Manchester United's dismal season reached a new low last night as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

The Red Devils were undone by Brennan Johnson's decisive touch late in the first half, which sent the ball agonisingly beyond goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Despite having time to respond, United failed to mount a meaningful comeback against their Premier League rivals.

The defeat marks another disappointing chapter in what has been a thoroughly underwhelming campaign for the once-dominant Manchester club.

Tottenham, meanwhile, celebrated wildly as they secured their first major trophy since 2008.

Former United captain Roy Keane did not hold back in his assessment of his old club's performance.

"Just when you think things can't get any worse for Man United. It's been the story all year," blasted Keane in his post-match analysis.

The Irish legend was particularly scathing about United's season-long struggles.

"They've been getting out of jail with European football and it's been covering the huge cracks at Man United. All season they have been so easy to beat," he continued.

Keane also criticised the team's lack of quality and limited options from the bench.

"If you're depending on Harry Maguire to get you out of jail you're in trouble," he added pointedly.

United's performance in the final was lacklustre at best, with the team failing to register a single shot on target until Luke Shaw's header in the dying moments of the match.

The Red Devils were unable to find a response in a game that distinctly lacked quality from their perspective.

This defeat caps a dramatic European campaign that began with three draws from three games, all after taking winning positions in the league phase.

Their quarter-final against Lyon was particularly chaotic, with United nearly squandering a man advantage before Harry Maguire's 121st-minute goal sealed a 7-6 aggregate victory.

Such drama, however, couldn't mask their fundamental deficiencies.

The victory for Tottenham ends their 17-year wait for a major trophy, bringing jubilation to their supporters who have endured a lengthy silverware drought.

For Manchester United, this defeat compounds what has been an entirely miserable domestic campaign.

The club currently sits in 16th place in the Premier League, a position unthinkable for a club of their stature and history.

This disappointing season points to the need for significant reflection and action over the summer months.
