Premier League drops vote on sponsorship rules after City's legal challenge, marking a win for the club in a separate battle from ongoing financial probe

Manchester City appear to have secured a significant victory in their legal challenge against the Premier League's associated party transaction (APT) rules.

A vote to amend these rules was dropped from a meeting between Premier League clubs on Thursday, indicating City's success in their legal battle.

This development, described as "potentially huge" by Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan, suggests that City may have triumphed in their dispute over the APT regulations.

The rules, introduced in 2021, aim to prevent clubs from inflating sponsorship deals with companies linked to their owners.

City argued that the APT rules discriminated against their ownership by the Abu Dhabi United Group, an investment company for the royal family of Abu Dhabi.

The club called the rules a "tyranny of the majority" and "discrimination", seeking damages for losses incurred due to what they claim are unlawful regulations.

The Premier League introduced APT rules in 2021 to ensure fair competition by preventing clubs from artificially inflating sponsorship deals with companies linked to their owners.

City's challenge to these rules is separate from the ongoing probe into 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches facing the club.

The APT rules were introduced to regulate commercial deals between clubs and entities linked to their owners.

City's legal challenge against these rules is separate from the ongoing investigation into 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches.

This separate probe, which began last season, relates to alleged breaches of the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules between 2009 and 2018.

The charges include accusations of failing to provide accurate financial information and not cooperating with Premier League investigations.
