The Red Devils have confirmed the departure of the 40-year-old

Manchester United fans have ripped into the club for sacking Ruben Amorim, with the 40-year-old relieved of his duties on Monday morning.

The Portuguese coach, who was appointed as Erik ten Hag's replacement in November 2024, has paid the price after criticising his bosses at Old Trafford following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

Amorim had suggested he wanted more backing from the likes of Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, while also implying that he'd prefer to be manager - instead of head coach.

Now, however, he's been cut loose with United confirming his exit in a statement.

They said: "Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

"Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

"With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

"This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

"Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."

United fans have, however, condemned the club for the timing of the decision.

Amorim's tenure was plagued by inconsitency, with the club stooping to many new lows during his time in the dugout.

Ultimately, though, it was his words - rather than his tactics, decision-making or bad results - that proved to be the final nail in his coffin.

One supporter wrote: "INEOS sacking Amorim for his media outburst is laughable.. Not the UEL final, not Grimsby, not the poor results, but a media outburst which looks bad on them will be the straw that broke the camels back, LMAOOOO this club."

Another said: "Laughable. If you are going to appoint a manager FOR A PROJECT, then BACK HIM. Well done board for ruining yet another season, and quite probably also the future of the club."

A third fumed: "Horrible timing, horrible statement. What a joke of the board."

A fourth echoed those words, stating: "I’m all for Amorim out but the timing of it stinks."

And a fifth raged: "Ultimately Amorim’s temperament has cost him. If he didn’t give yet another explosive interview yesterday he would still be in the job today."

United will now look at permanent replacements for Amorim.

Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis, starting with Wednesday night's showdown with Burnley at Turf Moor.

Xavi Hernandez is rumoured to be admired by United supremos behind the scenes, with the Spaniard still out of work following his departure from Barcelona in 2024.

Oliver Glasner, Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Unai Emery could all come under consideration as well.
