The 40-year-old has paid the price for his fiery outburst

Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United, just 24 hours after the 40-year-old took aim at the club's hierarchy following the club's 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday.

The Red Devils only hired the Portuguese coach in November 2024 following the departure of Erik ten Hag.

However, results have been largely underwhelming and, on Sunday, Amorim suggested he wasn't properly being backed behind the scenes.

Amorim has now been sacked with United set to appoint a replacement in due course.

A club statement read: "Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

"Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

"With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

"This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

"Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."

Amorim met with United chiefs Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada on Monday morning, with tensions running high behind the scenes.

And he was then informed that he had been relieved of his duties, with Fletcher poised to take charge on an interim basis.

Fletcher, who previously worked as a director and is currently in charge of the club's Under-18s, will oversee their Premier League showdown with Burnley on Wednesday night.

Regarding permanent replacements, there is no clear frontrunner.

Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez is rumoured to be interested in the job, while reports have suggested he's admired by Berrada behind the scenes.

Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Aston Villa's Unai Emery are candidates too, though any potential push for either man will have to wait until the end of the campaign.

Another potential option is Enzo Maresca, who was sacked by Chelsea on New Year's Day.

Meanwhile, speaking after the 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday, Amorim suggested that he wanted more control and power - while also calling on his superiors to 'do their job'.

"I just want to say I came here to be the manager, not to be the coach," he said.

"In every department - the scouting department, the sporting director – [they] need to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.

"I just want to say that I'm going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that.

"That is going to finish in 18 months and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job. Not to be a coach."
