The Red Devils won 2-1 at Wembley to clinch their second trophy under the Dutchman

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has admitted he's in the dark over his future at the club in the wake of their 2-1 FA Cup final win over Manchester City on Saturday.

The Red Devils were underdogs going into the match, having finished eighth in the Premier League table.

But United ended a nightmare season on a high with a 2-1 win over their fierce rivals.

Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo both netted in the first half and, while Jeremy Doku struck for City, it wasn't enough for them to force extra-time.

Ten Hag went into the job with his future the source of plenty of speculation.

Kieran McKenna, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank have all reportedly been approached by the club about replacing the 54-year-old.

And Ten Hag made it clear he wasn't thinking about his future after guiding the Red Devils to a first FA Cup trophy since 2016.

"I don't know. For me, this is a project," the 54-year-old told the BBC when asked about the rumours.

"When I came in we were a mess, now we are in a better state."

Ten Hag insists United were always destined to improve once key players returned from injury.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, who have missed plenty of matches this season, stood tall at the back.

And Ten Hag added: "All compliments to the team. We played very good to our identity. Very strong.

"You have seen how we can play when we have the players on board.

"Some were not even match fit but the performance was very good.

"I tell you [media] this all year - when the players are fit we can play good football. A very good performance against the best team in the world.

"With a local rivalry it’s there and it’s much more important when you play a team from your own city.

"But for us it wasn’t about this, it was to prove a point after so many setbacks. The team showed so much resilience and I’m proud of them."

Ten Hag has now won two trophies in as many years at United.

That puts him level with Jose Mourinho when it comes to silverware won at Old Trafford in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

And Ten Hag is proud of that achievement.

"Football is about winning trophies. I want to play the best football, dynamic, attacking football but in the end you have to win games and trophies," he continued.

"That’s the mentality we brought in. This was our one opportunity and we did it.

"I‘m very proud of the players and staff."

Mainoo was voted player of the match after helping United beat their fierce rivals.

In the eyes of Ten Hag, the sky is the limit for the youngster.

"He was really so enjoyable to watch. At his age. He’s an example," he said.

"We wanted him to come in and he got a bad injury in pre-season.

"I think we have to keep it calm. Here in England you’re very good to push players too high and then you hammer them with one or two bad performances."
