Carlos Sainz Sr has emerged as a shock candidate to become the next president of the FIA.
The 63-year-old, who is the father of Williams Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz, is said to have widespread support from executives across the various motorsports categories that the FIA has jurisdiction over, according to Sky Sports.
There is no concern of a conflict of interest within F1 teams regarding his son, as it is widely expected that the Spaniard would be able to delegate any topics that may impact the competitive nature of the sport.
A senior figure at a top F1 team told the broadcaster that Sainz’s “irreproachable” record in terms of personal integrity would eradicate any concerns and that he should be considered as a “very plausible candidate.”
Support from key motorsport figures will not be enough for Sainz Sr, though, as he needs to gain the support from FIA members.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem has overseen a very controversial term at the head of the governing body, after being elected president at the end of 2021 but appears keen to extend his tenure within the FIA.
The Emirati has been in many disputes with drivers across a variety of series over his decision to introduce harsher fines and punishments for swearing and other forms of misconduct.

Grand Prix Drivers’ Association director George Russell urged the FIA president to follow up on a statement in which he said he was “considering” making changes to the misconduct rules.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton also insisted drivers need to hold “a power start at the table” in regards to the sport’s governance.

The presidential election is scheduled to be held at the next FIA general assembly in Uzbekistan on December 12.
F1’s European season begins with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on May 16-18.
