Princess Donata of Prussia died at the age of 73 following an extended illness, her family has announced.

The House of Hohenzollern, which once ruled Germany, released a statement this week conveying its "deep sorrow" at her passing on February 25.

A direct descendant of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the final German Emperor, Princess Donata carved out a remarkable career far removed from royal tradition.

She dedicated decades to equestrian sports journalism, leading Pferd & Sport magazine as editor-in-chief and reporting from Olympic Games.

The princess spent her final months in Salzhausen, a small community in Lower Saxony.

Throughout her professional life, Princess Donata forged an independent path in the equestrian world, becoming a highly regarded authority on the sport.

Her expertise centred on eventing, international horse breeding with particular emphasis on Holsteiner horses, as well as coverage of major championships.

The Hohenzollern family noted she had been "a respected voice in her field" throughout her career.

Before transitioning to journalism, she competed at the German Junior Dressage Championships, developing skills that would inform her later reporting.

Her work took her to Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships as a correspondent.

In 2018, she received the prestigious Meteor Prize in recognition of her lifetime contribution to equestrian journalism.

Princess Donata's ancestry linked some of Europe's most significant royal houses.

Born in Bonn on Christmas Eve 1952, she was the eldest of three siblings, with two younger brothers.

Her father, Wilhelm Karl, Prince of Prussia, served as Grand Master of the Order of St John and kept horses that sparked his daughter's lifelong passion for the animals.

Through her mother, Kira Kirillovna of Russia, she descended from Tsar Alexander II and the Romanov dynasty.

Princess Donata also held the title Duchess of Oldenburg, reflecting the interconnected nature of European aristocratic families.

Tributes have poured in since news of her death emerged.

Jan Tönjes, president of the International Alliance of Equestrian Journalists, described her character: "Donata was straightforward; she didn't beat about the bush. But she was never emotional, rather sober Prussian virtues. She was reflective and interested, and could also be politely aloof at times. On the other hand, she could also be enthusiastic. She could enthuse."

Her former colleagues at Pferd & Sport remembered her as an "intelligent, knowledgeable woman who always had a sharp sense of humor, both for people and for horses".
