Illegal Migration Minister Michael Tomlinson has dismissed criticism from the Institute of Fiscal Studies about political parties not being honest about tax.

He told GB News: “I don't think that's quite right, because our manifesto is clear that there were two documents that were published on the day of the manifesto launch and I was there at Silverstone.

“There are two documents that were there, firstly, the manifesto itself, and secondly the costings behind it. Each and every one of our plans is fully funded.

“We have a plan, a very clear plan for lower taxes for lower immigration in stark contrast to the Labour Party that stands for higher taxes, and we all know where their instincts are.”

He continued: “There are plenty of people out there who are sceptical of politicians and that's why it was the right thing to do to publish that costings document to show that our plans for lower taxes are fully costed and are affordable.

“And that's a straightforward choice that we've got at the General Election, lower taxes, lower immigration under the Conservatives or higher taxes and higher immigration under Labour and that's the choice for the British people.”

Asked about the Conservative claim that a Labour government would mean more migrants crossing the Channel, he said: “There is evidence that people are waiting, they are not coming to the United Kingdom because of the deterrent effect of our Rwanda scheme.

“For weeks or months, people have been asking me, 'where is your evidence of the deterrent effect?' I've pointed to Australia, I've pointed to Albania.

“Last month, I was able to point to Ireland, where migrants from the United Kingdom moved into Ireland on the passing of our Rwanda bill.

“And today we've got further evidence, first-hand evidence from those who are waiting to cross who are saying we are not crossing because of the deterrent effects of the Rwanda scheme.

“We have a plan. We have a deterrent effect, Labour doesn't have a plan and it would throw the deterrence away.”
