Narinder Kaur has hit out at Home Secretary Suella Braverman, following her speech in Washington DC on updating the UN Refugee Convention from 1951.
Speaking on Mark Dolan Tonight, the broadcaster and social commentator was joined by former MEP David Campbell Bannerman, as they debated Braverman's comments on illegal migration and asylum seekers.
Mark asked Kaur: “Do you think that Suella Braverman is a political extremist?”
Kaur replied: “I think Suella Braveman is one of the nastiest, racist, homophobic, upper class, poisonous home secretaries this country has ever seen. She is nasty. And if that was anyone else they would have been sacked.
“If that was a white MP saying what she says, the fascist language she uses, they would be sacked. She's the brown face used to push racist rhetoric. She does appeal to the extreme right thing. That's a fact.”
Mark then criticised Kaur’s comments, stating: “Narinder, what you've just done there is indulge in a litany of racist remarks yourself, focusing on Suella Braverman's skin colour. The bottom line is that she has spoken out about unsustainable levels of migration into this country and across the western world. She speaks for millions!”
Kaur disagreed with Mark, saying: “No, she doesn't speak for millions. It's a lie, actually, because we're taking far more legal migrants than we do illegal.
“We have signatories to the UN Convention, we've got legal obligations. And actually the backlog is just a smokescreen. They can deal with the backlog. They refuse to deal the backlog.”
Mark then brought Bannerman into the debate, asking him: “Is Suella Braverman a political extremist?”
Bannerman replied: “Absolutely not, no. I thought it was a very brave and balanced speech. I have to say, attacks on her sound extreme, like what Narinder has just been saying. They sounded incredibly extreme, and you know she makes a reasonable point.
“Now let's get out the Refugee Convention of 1951, it's very old. It's out of date. Refugees get free reign there, all of that. And on multiculturalism as well, she was right. I believe in uniculturalism, one culture that embraces all of our differences and you know, we are one entity and that is a much healthier approach rather than have lots of ghettos, which seems to be arising as they have done in America and all, all around the world.
“So I think it was an excellent speech and I think it's appalling to be attacked as an extremist in such an extreme way, to be honest.”
