Black smoke signals no decision has been reached, while white smoke announces 'Habemus Papam' - we have a pope

Watch the livestream above of the Sistine Chapel chimney as 133 cardinals from across the globe gather to elect a new pope following the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88.

The conclave marks a significant moment for the world's 1.3 billion Catholics, who are watching closely as the sacred process unfolds behind Vatican walls.

The cardinals have failed to elect a new Pope, as black smoke emerged from the chimney of the chapel earlier this evening.

Black smoke signals no decision has been reached, while white smoke announces "Habemus Papam" - we have a pope.

There will be only one ballot on Wednesday. Thereafter, there can be as many as four votes a day - two rounds each morning and afternoon on subsequent days.

Each cardinal handwrites their chosen candidate on a piece of paper, folds it carefully, and drops it into a golden chalice placed on the chapel altar.

After ballots are counted, they are burned in a special stove with chemicals that produce distinctive smoke visible to the waiting crowds.

To be elected, a candidate must receive at least two-thirds of the votes from the College of Cardinals.

No clear favourite is yet to emerge, although Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle are considered the front-runners.
