Labour MP and Commons Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Emily Thornberry has revealed Lord Peter Mandelson was not vetted by the Foreign Office until after his appointment as Ambassador to the US.
Ms Thornberry made the revelation during an emergency debate on Lord Mandelson's appointment.
Sir Keir Starmer is under pressure to answer questions on the matter, such as what he knew about Lord Mandelson's involvement with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
