Reform UK's Head of Policy Zia Yusuf has declared the "Boriswave" of net migration under the Tories was the "greatest betrayal of democratic wishes".

Mr Yusuf said a Reform Government would replace indefinite leave to remain with a five-year qualifying work visa, carrying a higher salary threshold which will be determined closer to the next General Election.

It comes as Nigel Farage set out his party's plans to close a "rip-off" migration loophole and save the taxpayer some £230billion.

Despite the initial source of the claim, the Centre for Policy Studies, saying the figure should not be used, Mr Farage has stood by the sum.He said the anticipated cost of the 800,000 or more people who will qualify for leave to remain over the next three years was £230billion, deeming it "an absolutely eye-watering sum of money".

"We will not only say that these people do not qualify for indefinite leave to remain, we will abolish indefinite leave to remain as a category in this country," Mr Farage said. The loophole - dubbed the "Boriswave" thanks to the amount of people who entered the country after the Tories' 2021 "New Plan for Immigration", sees migrants given access to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in just five years.

ILR affords migrants the chance to live, work, and study indefinitely in the UK, as well as access to the NHS without the immigration health surcharge, and eligibility for certain public funds.
