The Health Secretary is seen as a clear frontrunner to replace the Prime Minister
Wes Streeting has been tipped to have a “problematic to say the least” relationship if he successfully challenges Keir Starmer and enters No10.
Speaking to GB News, Foreign Correspondent Sara Firth said the Health Secretary’s previous association with Peter Mandelson.
The Prime Minister has been under intense pressure to step down after Labour’s disastrous local election results, with Mr Streeting seen as one of the most likely successors.
Before the King’s Speech, the Health Secretary is set to meet with Sir Keir for showdown talks.
Ms Firth said: “I do think it's worth pointing out that, whilst on the UK side of things, Wes Streeting’s past relationship with Peter Mandelson may not seem so relevant when it comes to the current geopolitical climate.
“But the prince of Darkness, Peter Mandelson, he casts a long, long shadow.
“I do not think that this current administration would want anyone associated in any way with Peter Mandelson.
"On this side of the Atlantic, I think the Mandelson scandal would be problematic, to say the least."
In February, Mr Streeting released a tranche of correspondence between Lord Mandelson and himself “after a weekend of smear and innuendo that I have something to hide”.
The Health Secretary was warned that “more to come” from the Peter Mandelson files could damage his leadership ambitions.
