The figures have risen despite the Government's efforts to tackle the crisis through enhanced enforcement measures

Dawn Neesom pressed Labour's Defence Secretary for concrete answers on when the Government would halt illegal Channel crossings.

During the exchange, she challenged John Healey to provide a specific timeframe for ending the small boat crisis.

Speaking to the Labour Minister on GB News, Dawn said: "Can you give us a rough time? When will we stop seeing these boats coming across the Channel one month, six months, a year? How long are we talking?"

Mr Healey's response sidestepped the request for specific deadlines, instead pointed to the public dissatisfaction with previous governments' unfulfilled commitments.

He said: "Well, don’t you think that, over recent years, people have got fed up with politicians from David Cameron onwards setting targets for bringing down the number of migrants or ending the small boats?

"We are doing what we need to do. We’re not making any promises about when or how quickly, but we are giving the absolute commitment that we are dedicated to this job.

"We will try to win the trust of the British people and show that we’re a government that takes the security of our borders, and the security of our nation, very seriously."

GB News revealed earlier this week that illegal Channel crossings have surpassed 50,000 since the Labour Government assumed office.

The milestone was reached when an additional 430 individuals arrived by small boat, according to exclusive figures.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Since Labour's victory, 23,242 people completed the unauthorised journey last year.

Current provisional statistics indicate 26,986 have arrived in 2025, bringing the total under Sir Keir Starmer's leadership to 50,227.

These numbers present a challenging picture for the Prime Minister, who pledged to "Smash the Gangs" upon taking office.

The figures emerge despite the Government's efforts to tackle the crisis through enhanced enforcement measures.

The continuing arrivals underscore the scale of the challenge facing the administration as it attempts to secure Britain's borders whilst managing record-breaking crossing numbers.

A new arrangement with France to return a limited number of migrants became active last Wednesday.

However, smuggling networks have persisted undeterred, successfully transporting over 1,500 individuals to British waters since the agreement began.

The Government maintains that its Border Security Command will eventually reduce crossing numbers, though acknowledges meaningful results will require patience.

A Home Office representative outlined the strategy: enhanced intelligence cooperation internationally, increased enforcement activities in northern France, and stricter legislation through the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill.
