The First Minister blamed Westminster for a lack of funding, saying that energy bills and inflation are 'not my gift'

Humza Yousaf has been dubbed "out of touch" after claiming he "doesn't recognise" Glasgow's budget hole.

Last week, finance chiefs confirmed that the council is facing a £107m deficit in the next three years.

But speaking to the Glasgow Times, the first minister said he doesn't "recognise" the figure.

He added: "We'll obviously have a discussion with Glasgow and I meet with Glasgow City Council, as you can imagine, with some regularity.

"First and foremost, of course, we have all been hit by a significant cost of living crisis, where energy prices have gone up, so the council's energy bills have gone up. Inflation has gone up and the council, I’m afraid, is not immune to that."

The First Minister also blamed Westminster for a lack of funding, saying that energy bills and inflation are "not my gift".

He continued: "That is a direct result of complete economic mismanagement from the Conservative UK Government."

But the Scottish Conservatives criticised his comments, saying they show how "out-of-touch" the SNP leader is.

Scottish Tory MSP Annie Wells told the Scottish Express: "It is quite astonishing to see him in dispute with his own SNP council in Glasgow over their budget deficit, rather than recognising the damage his government’s cuts are doing to local authorities.

"The First Minister also seems oblivious to the impact his punitive tax rises are having on hard-pressed Scots struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

"Humza Yousaf should accept that the SNP’s disastrous tax-and-axe Budget is behind councils having to make cuts and hardworking individuals paying more than they would elsewhere in the rest of the UK."

The cash-strapped SNP Government increased taxes earlier this year, meaning workers in Scotland who earn more than £28,850 pay more income tax than their counterparts in the rest of the UK as a result of frozen thresholds and higher rates.

The average person earning £50,000 in Scotland pays £1500 more than their equivalent in England.

And last year, the Government introduced a new "advanced" income tax rate aimed at high earners.

The 45 per cent rate will apply to earnings between £75,000 and £125,140 from April. But in England, people on those salaries will be taxed at 40 per cent.
