Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has admitted to making an error over her tax affairs.

She says the error came down to not being able to give a full account of the circumstances of her “complex” living arrangements.

The Daily Telegraph reported she saved £40,000 in stamp duty when buying a £800,000 flat in East Sussex.

She allegedly told tax authorities the pad was her main home.

Ms Rayner told the local council it was her second home, meaning she pays a higher level of council tax there as a result.

She has now decided to refer herself to the standards watchdog after questions were raised about her housing and tax affairs.

There is no suggestion she has broken any laws, but many quarters have accused her of hypocrisy.
