Venezuela's president has declared a national emergency after the US launched airstrikes on capital city Caracas.

President Nicolas Maduro also mobilised defence forces after multiple explosions rocked the city at around 1.50am local time (5.50am GMT).

Attacks took place in the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, a statement from Caracas said.

A power outage affected the southern area of Caracas, near to a major military base, according to eyewitnesses.

An American official, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the US was carrying out strikes inside Venezuela.

For months, Donald Trump had promised land operations in Venezuela in a bid to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs to the States - as well as push President Maduro to leave.

The White House has declined to comment.

The Venezuela government said in a statement said the goal of the attack is for the United States to take possession of the country's oil and minerals.

It added that the United States "will not succeed" in taking the resources.
