Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey sided with the Post Office on IT scandal, says Lee Anderson
People went to prison because Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey sided with the Post Office as a minister and refused to listen to victims, Conservative Party deputy chairman Lee Anderson has claimed.
Anderson also called on Davey to make a public apology in Parliament to the victims of the Horizon IT scandal and their families.
He told GB News: “It would appear that in the past when he was the Post Office Minister that he took the side of the employers over the workers.
“As MPs, we often get cases come into our surgeries, into our office, and there's always two sides to every argument and as an MP, you have to look at both sides, speak to the victims and whoever the perpetrators are, and sometimes it's a completely different story when you get the bottom of it.
“This man, this Ed Davey, has not really looked at both sides of the story. He took the side of the Post Office employers and sadly many went to prison due to him not listening.”
In a discussion with Martin Daubney, he continued: “The thing is, if he actually resigned nobody would notice. So he could clearly carry on spouting his nonsense in Parliament as much as he likes and his constituents will make that decision at the next election.
“But he really should be coming out now - instead of making excuses, instead of saying he was lied to, he should properly apologise, make a public apology in Parliament to these people that sadly took their lives, the families of these victims, and the people who went to prison.”
He added: “Somebody's got to pay for this. Maybe that's a debate to have in Parliament, about the accountability of this firm [Fujitsu]. They made a lot of money and they made a lot of misery on the back of that money.”
Earlier, asked about Davey’s role in the scandal, Conservative MP Sally-Ann Hart said: “We need to find out what the circumstances are, why nothing was done at the time.
“If he is found to have been at fault and overlooked something that was glaringly obvious, then he should do what he tells everybody else to do when they make the slightest mistakes…he should consider whether he should himself resign.”
