His tweet followed his call for a 'People's Government' to replace the Conservatives

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has slammed Boris Johnson's Government following his resignation after the ongoing fiasco of allegations against Chris Pincher.

Highlighting the fact that Mr Johnson is the third Conservative Prime Minister to succumb to pressure from Tory infighting in the space of six years, Mr Corbyn said: "There is no solution to the deep economic and environmental crisis we face that picks our pockets and steals our future.

"Real change isn't a new Tory PM but a new politics to redistribute wealth and power."

Mr Corbyn called for a new government after Boris Johnson announced the "process of choosing new leader will begin" following his resignation as Conservative Party leader earlier today.

The former Labour leader was quick to condemn Boris Johnson yesterday, calling for a "People's Government" to replace the Conservative Party.

Mr Johnson opted to step down following days of pressure from his own politicians, which saw more than 50 of them resign in the wake of the the Chris Pincher row.

In a tweet to his followers the MP for Islington North said: "12 years of cruel Tory rule inflicting pain for the many to feather the beds of the few.

"Johnson should resign now but real change can only come when the Tories are swept away and replaced with a people's Government to redistribute wealth and power."

The Prime Minister assumed his position almost three years ago, promising to deliver Brexit in a swift and pragmatic manner.

During his premiership he has led the UK through the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw the country halt to a standstill in nationwide lockdowns imposed by his government.

Mr Corbyn was compared to Boris Johnson by his successor at Prime Minister's Questions last month, when the Labour Leader read out a list of comments made about the Prime Minister by his own MPs.

The Labour leader told the Prime Minister: "My personal favourite is this: this is a document circulated by his backbench, in which they call him the 'Conservative Corbyn'.

"Prime Minister, I don't think that was intended as a compliment."

Current Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was spotted in the royal box at Wimbledon amid chaotic scenes in Westminster, following the resignation of Boris Johnson.

Just minutes earlier, Sir Keir had warned the Tories that Mr Johnson should not be allowed to linger in Downing Street after resigning as party leader, and threatened to use a Commons motion to attempt to oust him if the Prime Minister refused to hand over the reins to a caretaker premier.

Mr Johnson intends to carry on as Prime Minister until a new Tory leader is elected, something which could take months.

Sir Keir said: “He needs to go completely. None of this nonsense about clinging on for a few months.”
