Davey has faced questions over his role in the scandal

Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey has hit out at the Post Office's "conspiracy of lies" as he lays out his intention to quash the convictions of those affected by the Horizon scandal.

Davey has faced questions over his role in the scandal after working as Post Office minister in David Cameron's government between 2010 and 2012.

He accused the Post Office of lying to him and other ministers over the matter which has resulted in Rishi Sunak unveiling primary legislation that will exonerate wrongfully convicted subpostmasters.

"They told me the same thing", he said.

"The Horizon system was working and there weren't many subpostmasters involved. It was clearly a conspiracy of lies.

"What has become clear is, the Post Office were lying to the subpostmasters, lying to victims, lying to courts and judges, lying to ministers of all parties over two decades."
