The daily habit has been shown to promote better growth and thickness over time

While hair texture and length are largely determined by genetics, there is growing evidence that lifestyle is also a critical factor.

Fortunately, scientific advances have led to the development of conditioning treatments and rituals that improve the appearance of hair, many of which are sustainable and natural.

It is widely believed that hair oiling can promote better growth and texture over time, provided they remain consistent with their efforts.

TikToker Niki Galvez shared her success after pairing her oiling routine with a massage tool for added stimulation, which she claims led to significant hair growth.

She told her viewers on the social media platform: “Let me show you how to do hair oiling effectively. I definitely used to do it wrong.

“I’m not going back, but it took me about two to three months to see results. I instantly noticed a difference in my hair because of the shine hair oil gives. It’s so moisturised, and I feel like it’s not frizzy at all anymore.

“After two to three months, I started seeing hair growth, and now it’s really crazy.”

Breaking down the two-step routine, she added: "I’m using this massaging tool now - it feels so good on my scalp. In the final step, I go in with an oil to help with length retention and let it sit for about four hours before washing it out.”

While the practice of oiling looks different for everyone, it primarily involves applying natural oils to the scalp and down the length of the hair.

“Similar to our skin, our hair needs a good balance of oils to keep it healthy and happy,” states the Cleveland Clinic.

“According to proponents of this practice, hair oiling’s main goal is to hydrate your hair and make up for any vitamins or minerals it may be missing after repeated washing.”

Previous research has suggested the method works particularly well for improving thickness when combined with scalp massages.

This combination can improve hair thickness and reduce hair loss by increasing blood flow and stimulating the hair follicles.

A notable study published in Dermatology and Therapy, conducted on nine Japanese men, showed a significant increase in hair thickness in the massaged areas compared to baseline measurements.

Researchers observed that the hair became slightly thicker over a 24-week period, growing from about 0.085 millimetres to 0.092 millimetres. Though this may seem like a small change, even minor increases in hair thickness can contribute to a thicker-looking scalp over time.

Daily massages are recommended for optimal growth, with some sources suggesting doing them twice a day.
