Morgan Spurlock has died at the age of 53 following a battle with cancer, his family have confirmed.

The documentary maker was behind the award-winning Super Size Me in 2003.

"Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity," his brother, Craig Spurlock, said in a statement.

According to ABC News, he continued: "The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man."

Released in 2004, Spurlock's documentary saw him consuming only Mcdonald's food for a 30-day period to show the fast food industry's corporate influence on poor nutrition.

By the end of the experiment, he had gained 25 pounds and suffered with depression as well as liver dysfunction.

During the #MeToo movement in 2017, Spurlock admitted to being "part of the problem".

In a lengthy social media post, he admitted to having settled an allegation of sexual harassment from a former assistant, according to Varietry.

The publication reports Spurlock had also been accused of rape in college, and his social media post concluded his documentary career as he stepped down from Warrior Poets soon after.
